Lake Mývatn and Mývatn Nature Baths

Formed during a massive eruption some 2,300 years ago, the surroundings of Lake Mývatn are a hotbed of volcanic activity. The area's mystique is amplified by bubbling mud pools, striking lava formations, and cone-shaped craters, with the ambient sound of the lake's diverse birdlife adding to its allure. You don’t have to take in the fantastic scenery on your feet all day, relax in the Mývatn Nature Baths, Northeast Iceland’s counterpart to the famous Blue Lagoon.

Dettifoss - Europe’s largest waterfall

Adding to the splendor of the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon is this towering waterfall, which features a staggering drop of 44 meters and a volume of water so vast it can be observed from several kilometers away. Watch for the spray clouds that mark its presence. Dettifoss is always stunning, but its ultimate impact is most deeply felt in spring after the seasonal meltwaters swell. If you get the feeling you might have spotted this famous fall before, it featured in the opening scene of Ridley Scott’s 2012 Aliens prequel, Prometheus.

Dimmuborgir lava field

Three marked trails lead through Dimmuborgir varying in length and taking up to an hour each. All of these paths are easy. In addition to shrubs and other vegetation, the Dimmuborgir area displays free standing lava cliffs and fortresses with grotesque shapes, holes, and small caves.
